Premium economy deals: Copenhagen on Delta, Air France, KLM for under $1,000

With incredible food, arts and architecture, not to mention its perch as TPG’s most sustainable destination of 2022, Copenhagen is a great place to visit.

There is another reason to book a trip to the Scandinavian city: great fares in premium seating later this fall and through the winter. Right now, you can get round-trip tickets from some East Coast cities in premium economy for under $1,000; that’s a bargain considering such tickets can cost up to $2,000 or more round-trip.

While you can certainly find plenty to do in Copenhagen, you could also use your flight as a starting point to explore additional cities in Denmark, or it can put you in a prime position to explore other parts of Europe.

It certainly helps when you can enjoy some extra comfort on your way to and from Europe aboard one of three SkyTeam carriers: Delta, Air France or KLM.

The deals we took note of involved round trip premium economy fares for under $1,000 to Copenhagen. Depending on your departure city, you may have your choice of flights aboard Delta Air Lines, Air France or KLM.

When booking with Delta, you’ll get to enjoy the carrier’s Premium Select cabin, which includes wider seats, TUMI amenity kits along with SkyPriority benefits and complimentary beverages.

If you fly with Air France or KLM, you’ll make stops in Paris and Amsterdam respectively, whereas Delta flies nonstop to Copenhagan Airport (CPH) from John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York.

The most inexpensive itineraries involved the nonstop Delta flights out of New York, but the prices were only $50 to $100 more out of the Washington, D.C. area or Boston.

While the nonstop flights certainly are intriguing, there could be a reason to consider one of the flights that bring you through Amsterdam or Paris if it gives you enough of a window to spend some time exploring the city during your layover.

Trips ranged from the late autumn months through the winter and the early part of March – so if you’re not tied to a warm destination for your spring 2023 trip, this deal could be an option.

Here are a few of the options we found:

New York to Copenhagen for $860 on Delta
Washington, D.C. to Copenhagen $930 on Delta
Boston to Copenhagen for $929 on a combination of Delta, Air France and KLM
New York to Copenhagen for $902 on Air France, with a stop in Paris

Let’s start by looking at the cheapest and most straightforward itinerary: Delta to Copenhagen nonstop out of New York. On this early December itinerary, you’d depart JFK at 9:25 p.m., arriving in Copenhagen mid-morning the following day aboard a Delta Air Lines Boeing 767. On the return trip, it’s an early afternoon departure, with a 4:00 p.m. arrival in New York.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to add some time in Paris to your itinerary, you might consider an option like this: Departing at 5:00 p.m. from Newark/Liberty International Airport (EWR) aboard an Air France Boeing 777, you’ll arrive at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) just after 6:00 a.m. local time. You’ll then have more than nine hours to explore the city before your 3:20 p.m. final leg to Copenhagen.

It may be a bit of an ambitious plan coming off of an overnight flight, but you will have enjoyed a bit more comfort on the premium economy flight over the Atlantic. You could grab some breakfast and lunch and see a few quick sites in the city before heading back to the airport for your second flight that gets you into Copenhagen at 5:15 p.m. On the return trip, you’ll have just a four-hour layover in Paris – which is probably too short to leave and longer than preferable, so it may be a good time to use an airport lounge.

For D.C. area travelers on Delta, you’ll typically make a stop at JFK before traveling on an itinerary similar to the aforementioned New York nonstop trip; you’ll just have positioning flights on either end of the trip from Dulles International Airport (DCA), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) or Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

Here’s an option for Boston travelers on a combination of all three SkyTeam carriers offering this deal. You’ll depart Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) aboard Air France at 5:30 p.m., arriving just after 6:00 a.m. local time in Paris. Then after a very short layover, you’ll fly Air France to Copenhagen. Then on the return trip, your first leg is aboard KLM to Amsterdam (AMS). Then after a stop of just under four hours, your return flight leaves mid-day aboard a Delta Airbus A330 to Boston.

Bottom line
